What Is An Invasive Species?

National Geographic states that "an  invasive, or non-native, aquatic species can be any organism that exists somewhere in or near water where it doesn't belong." Upon introduction of an invasive alien species (IAS) several negative repercussions can follow if it thrives: ecosystems disrupted, local fisheries affected and tourism-based economic activities which utilize these natural ecosystems can crash. Successful IAS usually don't have natural predators in its new environment due to lack of shared evolutionary history resulting in the rapid multiplicity of said organism.
